Become a Fitness Leader the YMCA way!

YMCA Certified Fitness Instructors are in demand. They are recognized across Canada. Employers and fitness leaders look for the YMCA Seal of Approval.

The YMCA offers you the opportunity to obtain a certification in Group Fitness, Individual Conditioning or Aquatic Fitness.

Basic Theory - This theory based course is the first step towards becoming a fitness leader. This course is the pre-requisite for all further training.

Basic Theory

This theory-based course is the first step towards becoming a Fitness Leader. Course content includes: YMCA Mission and Values, anatomy, physiology, healthy lifestyles, bio-mechanics, conditioning principles, exercise design and nutrition. Successful completion of the exam is required before progression to specialties.

Become a Basic Training Instructor

Level 1 - Individual Conditioning

Level 1 is designed to assist YMCA volunteers and staff in understanding the importance of building relationships with members. Learn the skills necessary to become an effective host in our conditioning centres while creating a positive atmosphere where members can strive for and achieve their health and fitness goals in Spirit, Mind and Body.

Level 2 - Individual Conditioning

Learn the basics of conditioning techniques, program design, cardiovascular and resistance training equipment, advanced theory and more. Successful completion of class time, written exam, apprenticeship and evaluation is required for certification. This is a level 1 and 2 combined course.

Become a Group Fitness Instructor

Fundamentals of Group Fitness

This is the next step in becoming a Group Fitness Instructor. Fundamentals of Group Fitness is the prerequisite for all Group Fitness streams. Learn specifics of group fitness instruction. This course combines the theory and practical components of delivering a group fitness class. Course content includes: class design, musicality, cueing, class components and safety.

Group Fitness Streams

Group Fitness Streams include: Group Resistance Training, Core Stretch and Strength, Group Cycling, Group Choreograghy Based, Aquatic Fitness

Prerequisites for all Group Fitness streams: Basic Theory, Fundamentals of Group Fitness

Successful completion of class time, written exam, apprenticeship and evaluation is required for certification.

Group Resistance Training & Core Stretch and Strength

In these two streams participants will learn how to deliver safe and effective group resistance training and basic group core strength or stretching classes.

Group Choreography Based

Participants will learn how to deliver safe and effective hi/low and/or step based classes.

Aquatic Fitness

Participants will learn how to deliver a safe, balanced and effective Aqua Fitness class, working all muscle groups. Includes all components -warm up, cardio, muscle work, cool down.  Come prepared with comfortable clothes, and a bathing suit.
